As a result of the success we have had with MTV Staying Alive Ignite show Shuga, our team have been discussing the possibility of doing it all again – bigger and better this year. The show, focusing on the fast lives and sexual conquests of a bunch of young Nairobi locals, has been a big success, (If you don’t know what we’re talking about – where have you been??), not just in Kenya, but in several countries around the world, Zambia in particular loved it so much they held a premiere and HIV testing drive there.
Check out: http://igniteblog.staying-alive.org/kenya/shuga-premiere-zambia/ for the review.
But we wanted to see what you guys thought of a sequel in Kenya -
Do you think it would work?
Should we keep the same characters?
And what issues should it be around?
Throw some ideas at us people…
If you haven’t yet seen Shuga or want a little inspiration, below is a chance to catch up with all three parts of the drama:
Shuga Episode 1

I think suga 2 wuld be a gud follow up. An idea that could be brought up is the spread of aids, not only through sex but drugs as well. Emphasizing on the drug aspect and coining it wth the sex aspect wuld work.
I wuld really love 2 audition 4 the next one, thats if there is gonna be another one.
Defo!!!! A sequel and LONGER this time round.. Shuga was well appreciated and I believe all would welcome a sequel. Maybe we can follow up on where the last episode left off. How about life after the HIV tests? We can bring in new characters if need be.. I loved the cast so I say we stick with the same characters.. maybe someone will die in the sequel.. hmmm just thinking.. Anyway, there are reasons I am not the script writer nor the director.. LOL
That is a GREAT Idea! I think SHUGA 2 could deal with the current characters lives and how they cope with their new found status. I haven’t seen much on TV in Kenya about people’s sexual lives after an HIV+ diagnosis – I think MTV Staying Alive Ignite would be a pioneer in tackling THIS sensitive subject.
We were really left hanging with SHUGA 2 so please satisfy our curiosity!
Dude! This sounds amazing. I completely agree with the comments above and I believe that a wider audience would love this show. I found it to be timely, poignant, powerful and very well made. Absolutely keep the same cast!! no question. Please make this.
A sequel… U knw what they say about sequels – they tend2 water down the other movie.
So if u guys r doin in,step it up! Switch up the scene.
Do smthn guys won’t be expectn bt with the underlying msg still shown strong.
I think u shud maintain the characters that r thea if Shuga will be a continuation from where it left off.
If it’s a whole otha story, switch up the cast.
U cud also try n boost the screenplay by letting the viewers into the mind of the cast. U cud incorporate Shuga 1 with how the characters turned out how they turned out – what made them, what broke them… That way, it’s a blast in the past that’l help us understand where they’re coming from. With that, old n new characters r in the mix.
U cud also incorporate the ‘blast into the future’ to help guys understand what helped them with their turning points.
In short,Shuga 2 should be the untold stories.
If u need help developing the screenplay, or an outside point of view 0736326570. Would love to be involved in any way.
BLESSINGS!!!
Hell to the yeah!! Shuga 2 is a great idea. I agree with what has been said above. Shuga was a real eye opener to what is happening. I think it is also an amazing way to overcome the whole idea of sex talk and the issue of AIDS being a taboo topic! Same cast for sure! Definately looking forward to Shuga2.
Please please PLEASE keep the show going. And it needs to be longer this time! It was way too short and we are all anxious for more.
The cast NEEDS to stay the same. The current characters are already an essential part of the show and it would be a disappointment to change it up.
The show is amazing and I am so excited about Shuga 2. Thanks for making it and best to the cast, writers and production team. Lupita is my favorite!
DEFINITELY! There aren’t any other shows like it, and we need more. Same characters, same tough issues, bigger audience.
SHUGA was awesome! Truthful, fun and beautiful. And the lead girl is so hot!
I loved Shuga1. &so did every1 i know that watched it (99%of my pals watched it).
I also loved how the drama fused wit our kenyan lifestyles.
Its the best kenyan feature & im betting Shuga2 will be several times more successful.
watching SHUGA in Brooklyn, NY…it is a fresh, honest, entertaining and wonderfully acted web series.
PLEASE do SHUGA 2…i want to know what happens next in the lives of the characters, especially Ayira and Ty.
So please do a sequel and bring back all the amazing actors!
I love this show I’d like to see a sequel with the same characters dealing with life after contracting HIV. Living with the virus is possible it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. a positive twist with someone saying its probably the best thing that has happened to them….
Definitely make a Shuga 2! It’s eye opening, informative and entertaining. The cast is excellent, and Ayira is my favorite character – dynamic and real.
I am really happy that this has come up and I am extremely excited that once again we will get to delve into the lives of the youth as a whole and Shuga has played a great part in showcasing HIV/AIDS issues and how to deal with them. It is imperative that we continue to push the envelope and I must say that every character in Shuga played a great part in highlighting issues like treatment, testing and care for HIV/AIDS patients.
The funny man Kennedy helps to highlight those in society who are really never serious about their own life and they are a part and parcel of our own lives and need attention. He is also very much into Alcohol and probably in the sequel, we should see him as a struggling alcoholic which also plays a great part in exposing him to HIV
Ty and Leo bring out the wonder boys who are in love but everywhere they go, they have to make decisions that will help take them to the next level but again, there are obstacles.
Skola and Virginia both have AIDS and the way they will treat and be treated coz of this condition is easier said than done. We want to see how their friends will treat these situations because friends do change and change….. well that’s a whole subject
Sindi, Violet and Ayira especially help to bring out issues like Family relations, transactional sex, struggles in school and peer pressure and its only inevitable that we break down these and hopefully other characters inorder to decipher youth relationships and choices that we make in life.
I say keep all the characters and introduce a web of more characters to address more issues.
Let’s do this! Let’s be Shugafied!
Shuga baibe!
I met Anto aka Nikundialala aka Kennedy the Remedy in the neighbourhood advising some young guys who had initially asked him for auditions and he turned it into an opportinty to advise them and acted like a mentor to them and for those few seconds, I knew that it’s not just about acting, there is a moral issue to it! They actors have to provide a platform to the youth! They speak issues that the youth face and although they got money and some fame, I felt so humbled by the way he still maintained his humanity and is a part of the reality that we face today. I know those young boys have a little bit of hope in there to be better people through Ambassador Kennedy!
All the CAST HAS TO REMAIN THE SAME and do no hesitate to venture into the issue of transactional sex! A lady or a man doesnt have to get money to have sex with those they admire! Let’s get real!
Let me go get that Blog interview with Kennedy! Human and Humane!
I like the cinematography, and the overall visual sheen & SFX applied to the video. This contributes to a story told well in sounds and pictures, not to forget great acting by the elegant lady also known as Ayira. Keep up the quality.More seasons, please!
nice it’s comin up again. bt ds time i lk u guys 2 act more on sexual harassmet based on young teenagers, nd ur main stuff dt’s hiv/aids.
This is great!!!
I agree with most of the views expressed by my predecessors on Life after HIV (not necessarily AIDS).
I would also like to see how the theme of abstinence is pushed here. We get to see SIndi as an advocate for abstinence but never got to know what her tipping point was(other than the deceased auntie) and how her choiceturned out in the end. What are the benefits of abstinence? What are some of the things I can do to aid me in abstaining? Is it still ‘cool’ to abstain? These are some of the issues I would love to see in Shuga 2.
Keep up the good work. Anto, naona you have taken the issue of HIV and the youth to a whole other level as a performing artist. keep it up! and you are always welcome to Msa (Shawarma kwa sana!)
i think shuga should include minority groups like msm/wsw to mitigate need to reach the MARPS in hiv prevention and care and also a platform to create awareness in their existence
Shuga was amazing and I think it’s definitely an EXCELLENT idea to have a sequel. The issues brought out were without a doubt issues that need to be addressed to the youth in Nairobi. Does Ayira test positive? How does it impact her life? It would be nice to know how the lives of the girls continue with them being positive/negative and how they influence other people’s lives. Ayira seems to be a very strong-minded and charismatic character…what’s in store for her? there are so many unanswered questions! PLEASE release more episodes!
this would be a great lesson for young people (and older people) particularly those looking to adopt particular cultures … looking at the consequences would enable them appreciate African traditional norms of values, others to apc8 values of their spirituality. But would also be gr8 if some actors would lead by example (knw wat i’m sein)
Shuga 2 will be a definite yes for me. I liked the first one but would love to know what happened to violet after doing her second HIV test. Would she turn negative or positive? Will she change her behavior or not. Skola’s life after going public. Then lets have the pregnancy thing in there. These days we fear getting pregnant than getting infected by HIV. Let the producers bring that out. Thats mostly with working women. You give them the idea if you feel it can sell. Again some of the characters were in school. We should know what happened after school. How have they moved from there, are some of them still hanging in the college life (there are some who think they are young for ever) or grown up.
This truly is a heartbreaking yet inspiring and eye opening piece of work. Kudos to all those involved I would definitely like to see a sequel and as Tinez has said before me, it would be nice to know how all the characters dealt with their statuses. Perhaps this would help reaffirm that there is indeed life after HIV. All in all, I LOVED it! Good work!
